ABOUT ABBEYLEIX

Abbeyleix truly is a wonderfully historical town. It was founded in the 18th century as an estate town by Viscount De Vesci and is situated near a 12th century Cistercian monastery beside the River Nore. Today, you'll find a range of historical structures still standing in and around the town - ancient ring forts, burial grounds, early monastic buildings, castles, churches and colonial estate houses.
The town once had a major carpet factory -
notably producing carpets used on the ill-fated RMS Titanic.
A most attractive town with tree-lined streets,
retaining much of it’s original 19th century architecture,
Abbeyleix has been awarded ‘Heritage Town’ status and has benefited from a tasteful face lift with authentic old world street lighting etc.
The town has a magnificent golf course, a very active tennis club,
and many delightful walks including one starting from the grounds of
St. Michael & All Angels Church of Ireland, known as The Lords Walk.
It boasts many interesting pubs and bars, including the world-famous Morrissey's, reputed to be one of the oldest in Ireland, and of course this hotel's own Malachi's Bar.
Nearby, Moyne Polo Club, one of the largest in Ireland, offers exhilarating entertainment throughout the summer. There are many beautiful gardens to visit close to hand, and wonderful fishing on the internationally renowned River Nore. Historians will be interested to note that the tomb of the last High King of Laois, Malachi O’More, is situated in the grounds of Abbeyleix Demesne, one of the most impressive and significant country estates on this island.
